About Harrogate

Victorian Spa Town & Rural District

Founded in the 16th century, William Slingsby discovered the first spring in 1571 in the area now known as Harrogate. The spring was named Tweit Well Spring and the water coming from this spring was found to be medicinal. Tourists from all over the country made their way to the town to test the curative powers of the water. By the late 16th century, more springs had been discovered such as the sulphur spring, and the various waters were recommended for the treatment of a variety of ailments including scurvy and epilepsy. Due to the increase in people flooding the area, entertainment and hospitality venues were built around the springs which had also had their own pump buildings constructed.

After years of popularity and an increase in infrastructure to support the growing population, Harrogate became a famous town across the country and was developed further into the spa town we know today.
